Ghanaian-born Italian midfielder Samuel Wiafe converted his penalty in the shootout but could not prevent Italy from losing 5-4 to Denmark in the fifth-place playoff of the ongoing UEFA European Under-19 Championship on Wednesday.
The two sides failed to find the breakthrough after 90 minutes, forcing the game into a penalty shootout where Denmark held their nerve to claim fifth place.
Wiafe lasted the entire match for Italy and confidently scored his spot-kick, but the Azzurrini eventually fell short in the shootout.
The 18-year-old featured in three matches during the tournament, making appearances against Croatia, Ukraine and Denmark as Italy ended their campaign in sixth place.
Wiafe, who is contracted to Serie A side Genoa until 2030, will now shift his focus to the new season as he hopes to break into the club’s senior team.
