The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Deputy General Secretary, Haruna Mohammed, has rejected claims that the party was insensitive for staging its “Democracy Under Attack” demonstration on August 6, the same day the nation commemorated the victims of the military helicopter crash.
Speaking on JoyNews’ The Pulse on Thursday, August 6, Mr Mohammed responded to comments by the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) Deputy Director of Elections and IT, Rashid Tanko-Computer, who accused the NPP of failing to show respect to the memory of the eight Ghanaians who died in the August 6 helicopter crash.
Mr Mohammed insisted that the NPP was represented at the memorial service.
“I’m very surprised that he participated in that event because he said he had been there and did not see Honourable Abena Osei Asare, who represented the Minority. She was there. You can cross-check with the officials.”
“Honourable Hackman Osei Agyemang, who also represented the party, and the Chairman of the Council of Elders of the party were represented. So these two key individuals represented the Minority and the party,” he stated.
Mr Mohammed also dismissed suggestions that the NPP should have postponed its demonstration to another date.
He, however, accused the NDC of applying double standards, arguing that President John Mahama did not attend the commemoration of the late President John Evans Atta Mills.
“When Professor Mills’ Remembrance Day was being observed, John Mahama was nowhere to be found. In fact, it took Frimpong-Boateng to read the speech on that particular occasion,” he claimed.
According to Mr Mohammed, President Mahama, who served as Prof. Mills’ Vice-President before succeeding him as President, should have attended the event if the issue was one of sensitivity.
“The President selected Mr Mahama as his running mate and subsequently as Vice-President. He became President after Prof. Mills passed on and relied on his legacy to become President. Yet when they were commemorating him, he refused to attend,” he said.
“The point is that if it is about insensitiveness, then their own is even over the roof because this is a man who nurtured him, made him Vice-President and eventually President. So if it’s about insensitiveness, then the NDC is even more guilty,” he added.
