The University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) has responded to allegations by Ghanaian-American comedian Michael Blackson following the death of his 83-year-old mother at the facility, saying some of the claims made about her care do not reflect the events that occurred.
In a statement, UGMC expressed its condolences to Blackson and his family but said the account shared on social media contained “numerous inaccuracies” regarding the medical care provided to his mother.
The comedian had accused the hospital of poor service delivery, alleging that his mother was repeatedly misdiagnosed, that financial considerations were prioritised over patient care, and that the facility failed to show compassion following her death on July 16, 2026.
Blackson, in posts on X, described UGMC as “the worst hospital in Ghana” and alleged that the facility charged his family about GH₵250,000 in bills within a month before informing them that his mother had died from an infection.
He also claimed that a staff member showed no sympathy when he went to identify his mother’s body and alleged that a hospital worker requested a tip.
Additionally, he alleged that his sister was involved in a physical confrontation with a male nurse, who later contacted the police.
Responding to the allegations, UGMC said it had taken the concerns seriously and conducted a review “thoroughly, fairly and objectively” in line with its clinical and administrative procedures.
However, the hospital said it would not publicly disclose details relating to the patient’s diagnosis, treatment, medical records or care history because of its obligation to protect patient confidentiality.
“Consistent with the ethical standards of our institution and our core values, we have a duty to safeguard the confidentiality of every patient’s medical and personal information, an obligation that continues even after death,” the hospital stated.
UGMC said all clinical decisions concerning Blackson’s mother were made by qualified healthcare professionals based on medical judgment, established standards of care and the best interests of the patient.
It also rejected suggestions that financial considerations influence medical decisions, stating that its billing processes are transparent, governed by institutional policies and operate separately from clinical care.
On the alleged altercation involving Blackson’s sister and a hospital employee, UGMC said the matter had been referred to the appropriate law enforcement authorities and declined further comment.
The hospital added that it remains willing to engage with the family privately through the appropriate channels and would investigate any specific allegations of misconduct by staff members.
“Any specific allegation of misconduct by a member of staff will be investigated fully and, where warranted, referred to the relevant authorities,” UGMC said.
The facility had earlier responded to Blackson’s social media posts, saying it was sorry to learn that his experience had been unsatisfactory and welcomed the opportunity to discuss his concerns.
Blackson has expressed doubts about pursuing legal action in Ghana, arguing that the legal process could take too long.
The dispute comes amid broader public discussions about patient experience, healthcare accountability and the need for stronger feedback mechanisms within Ghana’s health facilities.
