Ghana international Andre Ayew believes the Ghana Football Association (GFA) took too long to sack former coach Otto Addo.
According to the former NAC Breda forward, the German-based trainer should have been sacked the moment he failed to lead the Black Stars to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Under the tutelage of Addo, Ghana failed to qualify for the continental showpiece for the first time in 20 years, raising questions about the coach’s future.
He was eventually sacked prior to the team’s appearance at the 2026 World Cup, with Carlos Queiroz taking his place.
“When it comes to [the sacking of] Otto Addo, it was a call that maybe should have happened a long way before,” Ayew said, speaking to former Nigeria international Mikel Obi on a podcast. “I think when you are Ghana, and you don’t qualify for the AFCON, you can’t go further; that’s my point of view.
“I know him; I’ve played under him when he was an assistant and as a coach. But after that he was able to qualify us to the World Cup. So then, it balances.
“Then there was about five or six friendly matches just after then we lose all, and now it becomes a bit tangible and that is where I think everybody becomes important in this moment.”
The Black Stars are on a search for a new coach ahead of the qualifiers for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations with Queiroz’s contract expiring last month.
