No structure on waterways will be spared – Greater Accra Regional Minister warns

Date:

The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Ocloo, has disclosed that authorities have quietly begun demolishing structures obstructing drains and waterways across the region as part of efforts to prevent flooding.

Speaking on Adom TV’s Badwam ahead of the National Clean-Up Exercise scheduled for Friday, July 10, and Saturday, July 11, she said several structures earmarked for demolition had already been identified during aerial inspections.

“We have started demolishing on a low key, just that people are not seeing what we are doing. In fact, the last time His Excellency used a helicopter to move around, marking some of the places where we thought, by hook or crook, those buildings should be down,” she said.

According to the Minister, the military has been tasked to support the exercise and ensure strict enforcement of directives aimed at clearing waterways.

“The military have taken over now. Demolishing is part of the directive we have given.”

She stressed that buildings found to be sitting on drains or obstructing the free flow of water would not be spared.

“As part of the clean-up exercise, places where we feel buildings are sitting on drains and blocking waterways, we will make sure we demolish them all,” she said.

The nationwide clean-up exercise forms part of the government’s efforts to improve sanitation and reduce the risk of flooding in vulnerable communities.
