Ghanaian Government Pledges Support for Tema Oil Refinery’s Revitalization

Date:

The Ghanaian government has reaffirmed its commitment to revitalizing the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR), with Minister of State at the Ministry of Energy, Herbert Krapa, assuring that the government will provide guidance and support to secure a strategic partner within the next 90 days.

During his inaugural visit to TOR, Krapa emphasized the need for immediate interventions to prepare the refinery for a potential investor. This includes operationalizing critical departments such as the laboratory to ensure the refinery’s readiness.

TOR’s Managing Director, Kofi Tagoe Mocumbi, confirmed that the process of selecting a strategic partner has commenced, with a deadline of 90 days. The government’s objective is to provide TOR with the necessary capital, technology, and efficiency to revamp and expand its operations.

Currently, the refinery, which has a capacity of 45,000 barrels per stream day, is utilized as a depot and storage facility for oil marketing companies. The government is determined to find a strategic investor to revive the company, with Krapa stressing the need for urgent attention and efficient preparation to facilitate a smooth transition.

The National Petroleum Authority has also pledged its support, with Deputy Chief Executive Officer Perry Okudzeto affirming their readiness to provide guidance, regulations, and support to ensure TOR’s successful revitalization. With the government’s commitment and the collective efforts of stakeholders, TOR is poised for a significant transformation, aiming to resume full operations within three months.
