GHANA AND CHINA SIGN US$30 MILLION GRANT AGREEMENT TO BUILD NEW UNIVERSITY IN DAMONGO

Date:

Ghana and the People’s Republic of China have signed a US$30 million grant agreement to support the construction of a university in Damongo, in a move aimed at expanding access to tertiary education and deepening bilateral cooperation.

The agreement was signed during a meeting between the Minister for Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, and the outgoing Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, Tong Defa.

Dr. Forson, on behalf of President John Mahama and the people of Ghana, expressed appreciation to Ambassador Tong for his contribution to strengthening Ghana–China relations during his tenure.

On his Facebook page, he wrote;

“Earlier Today, I received the outgoing Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, H.E Tong Defa.
The visit was also an important moment in our bilateral cooperation, as Ghana and China signed a US$30 million grant agreement to support the construction of a university in Damongo in the Savanna Region.
I thanked Ambassador Tong on behalf of President Mahama and the people of Ghana for his service and commitment to strengthening Ghana–China relations.
I also reiterated the importance of reducing exchange losses in our bilateral trade. It is only logical that trade between Ghana and China should increasingly be settled in our own currencies.
I wish Ambassador Tong Defa well in his future endeavours and look forward to the continued strengthening of Ghana–China relations.”
