KGL Foundation U-17 Championship launched ahead of sixth edition

The 2026 KGL Foundation U-17 Inter-Regional Colts Championship has been launched in Accra, with the competition set to begin on Sunday, October 4, 2026.

The launch ceremony took place at KGL House, Labone, on Friday, October 2, and was attended by senior officials from the Ghana Football Association (GFA), representatives of the KGL Foundation and key figures in juvenile football.

GFA President Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku led the associations delegation. Executive Council Members Nana Sarfo Oduro, Alhaji Abu Hassan Rhyzo, Fred Acheampong, Dr. Gifty Oware-Mensah, Kingsley Osei Bonsu, Gideon Fosu and Eugene Nobel Noel were also present.

Four Regional Football Association chairmen attended the event: Alhaji Salifu Zida of the Upper East Region, Dr. Charles Osei Anto, Osei Tutu Agyemang of the Ashanti Region and Simon Ehomah of the Western Region.

Now entering its sixth edition, the tournament will feature leading under-17 players identified through Regional Colts competitions across Ghanas football regions.

The championship is intended to provide a high-level competitive environment for young players while helping identify and develop prospects for Ghanas national under-17 side, the Black Starlets.

Speaking at the launch, KGL Foundation Director Christian Salamouni restated the organisations commitment to supporting youth development through sport.

Mr Salamounis comments came as the Foundation continued its backing of grassroots football. GFA President Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku, meanwhile, expressed his appreciation to the KGL Foundation for its sustained investment in the development of the game at youth level.

As part of its contribution to the 2026 competition, the Foundation supplied 50 sets of training markers and 300 size 5 footballs.

The support package also includes 640 jerseys, comprising 32 home kits and 32 away kits with shorts, together with 640 pairs of football socks.

A total of 96 medals have been provided, with 32 each for the gold, silver and bronze categories. The Foundation has also supplied a trophy and medals for the overall winner, first runner-up and second runner-up.

Individual prizes will be presented for the Golden Glove, Goal King and Most Valuable Player awards.

The opening of this years championship is scheduled for Sunday, October 4, 2026, at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram.
