Accra Sports Stadium faces possible closure pending technical assessment

Date:

The future of the Accra Sports Stadium will be determined after an ongoing technical assessment, according to Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Yaw Ampofo Ankrah.

Speaking on Sporty FM, Ampofo Ankrah revealed that a French company engaged through the Ministry of Sports and Recreation recently completed an inspection of the country’s premier sports facility. He said the findings will establish the true condition of the stadium and determine whether it should remain open or be closed for rehabilitation.

“The report will tell us the true state of the Accra Sports Stadium, whether we need to close down the stadium for a few weeks, months or a year,” he said.

Ampofo Ankrah admitted the stadium is in poor condition, stressing that superficial repairs will not resolve its long-standing structural problems.

“It’s not about painting or tightening screws,” he said, noting that previous renovations carried out before major tournaments have failed to provide lasting solutions.

He called for a comprehensive rehabilitation plan to restore the stadium to the standard expected of Ghana’s flagship sporting venue.

The technical assessment report is expected to determine whether the Accra Sports Stadium remains operational or undergoes an extended period of rehabilitation.
