Morocco PM rebukes Lekjaa over 2030 World Cup final claim

Date:

Moroccos Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch has criticised Royal Moroccan Football Federation (RMFF) President Fouzi Lekjaa after he claimed that the 2030 FIFA World Cup final would be played in Casablanca.Lekjaa made the declaration at a political party event, saying the Benslimane province would have the honour of hosting the tournaments showpiece match. However, FIFA has yet to decide which of the three co-hosts, Morocco, Spain or Portugal, will stage the final.Akhannouch urged Lekjaa to avoid making such declarations before discussions with Moroccos co-hosts.Do not offer to host the big final game in Morocco while we still have not discussed the matter with our allies, Spain and Portugal. There should be some respect, brothers, Akhannouch said at a rally ahead of elections later this month. He also warned against using the hosting decision as an electoral promise, stressing the importance of the issue.Stop using electoral promises to pull the rug out from under us. These are huge matters. Deciding where the final will be held is a major issue, he added. The RMFF has not responded to a request for comment on Lekjaas remarks.Morocco is preparing a proposed 115,000-capacity stadium for the 2030 tournament. As of May, construction was reportedly around 30 percent complete, with officials targeting completion by the end of 2027.FIFA has not indicated when it will announce the venue for the 2030 final.
