Ashanti Gold 04 head coach Karim Zito has defended Ghana midfielder Kwasi Sibo’s decision to join Libyan champions Al-Swehly, saying the Black Stars player was right to prioritise his future despite criticism over the transfer.Sibo completed a reported $10m move to the North African club after leaving Spanish side Real Oviedo, a switch that has prompted mixed reactions following his appearances for Ghana at the 2026 World Cup in North America.Zito said the 28-year-old should not be criticised for making a career move he believes is in his own best interests.”I’m 100% behind Kwasi Sibo. If you don’t fight for yourself now, nobody will fight for you,” he told 3Sports.The experienced coach also questioned whether promises made to footballers are always fulfilled, pointing to what he said were unfulfilled commitments made to Ghana’s players after an Africa Cup of Nations triumph.”Even when Ghana won the AFCON, they promised to be given houses; it did not come.”What is the motive of playing football?” he quizzed.Sibo featured prominently for Ghana during the World Cup, playing 249 minutes across four matches. He started the Black Stars’ goalless draw with England and also made appearances against Panama, Croatia and Colombia.The midfielder is expected to play a key role as Al-Swehly prepare for their CAF Champions League campaign, with the Libyan champions set to face Zanzibar’s KVZ in the preliminary round.It remains unclear whether Sibo will be included in Ghana’s squad for next month’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches.
